Computer Science and Applications

The Department of Computer Science and Applications was formed in the year July 2007. The department offers the program, Master of Computer Application. But, the MCA program has been in place since 2005. During the interval 2005-2007, the MCA program was being offered by the department of Computer Science and Engineering. Considering the growth potential of the computer Science and Application field, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering spawned the department of Computer Science and Application in June 2007 and it started functioning as an independent department since then .We have 9 faculty members in our department. Seven of the faculty members are post graduates. There are two M.Tech holders, five MCA holders and two B.Tech holders in the department.  Our department has got a total student count of 184.

The MCA program was formulated, taking into account the emerging areas of Computer Science. The MCA program is open to the students of computer / non-computer background. The curriculum and syllabi of MCA is designed in such a way that it starts from the basics of computers and covers all the major areas of computer science. C programming, Data Structures, Operating systems, Database management systems Object Oriented Programming, Computer networks, Computer Organization and architecture computer graphics, Visual programming etc are some of the core subjects. The curriculum also offers the elective subjects in different streams like Data mining, Distributed Computing, Component Technology, UNIX internals, Simulation and modelling, Micro processors, Multimedia Systems, Advanced Database management systems etc. Mathematic courses are offered in first three semesters which include Mathematical Foundation for computer Applications, Numerical Statistical methods and algorithms, and Operations Research. Each theory course is supplemented with a lab component, hence giving exposure to the practical aspects of the course. Students are also given training in their soft-skills by the placement cell of the college, which equips them to attend the interviews and develop inter-personal skills .They are also offered the valve education course to inculcate the spirit of selfless service among students. The curriculum is regularly revised through board of studies meet to improve education standard.

We have two well equipped computer labs with around (130 + 192) computers. The lab facility is available to students from 8.30 am to 8 pm on all working days and till 5 pm on second Saturdays. Extra lab facility will be available to students even on Sundays. Each student will get a separate computer during their lab hours and there will be four teaching staff per class i.e. one teaching faculty per 15 students. Also there will be two technical staff (ITES) per lab. Here we have a well equipped CISCO lab with 48 computers. The students can practice networking in this lab. CISCO also organises some short term courses such as CCNA, B+, etc. to enhance the student’s knowledge. The Red hat lab run by the ITES people organises courses on RHCE. The students can expertise knowledge in Linux environment using this lab. Different campuses of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham are interconnected via EDUSAT satellite facility, so that the experts at one campus can interact with the students of all other campuses. We have three Projector rooms which helps the faculty to teach using power point slides and show demos in computer.

Staff members are encouraged to attend quality improvement programmes in other reputed institutions, to enhance the teaching skills of faculty. Faculty development programs are also organised within the department for updating the knowledge of faculty members. The faculty members, who are new to the teaching field, are helped with the practise of peer evaluation where each faculty member will make their peers sit in their class during the lecture hour and make them give necessary comments and suggestions for the improvement of teaching quality.

We have adopted a credit based course curricula and continuous evaluation. Faculty can decide on the evaluation policy adopted for their course .70% of the weightage is assigned to theory component and 30% of weightage to lab component. Evaluation is also done by giving assignments, tutorials, quizzes, term paper presentations and seminar presentations.

Students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate events and organise technical, cultural and sports events as part of their association activity. Students are allowed to go for industrial visit twice in their program and they will be accompanied with staff members. Students are also made aware of the need of rendering selfless service to society by the association of Amritasanjeevani. Amritasanjeevani involves the students in seva activities like cleaning of public places, visiting orphanages and hospitals, planting trees and plants, doing crafts work, attend spiritual talks by eminent spiritual aspirants.

With the existence of dedicated faculty members and motivated students the department of Computer Science and Application has and is expected to play a good role in the growth of AmritaVishwa vidyapeetham.
