Department of Information Technology started in June 2002 as a part of Amrita Institute of Technology & Science (AITEC) with one batch of 60 students.From 2004 onwards, the department came under Amrita School of Engineerng (ASE). The students admitted from 2004 - 2006 were through the Kerala Entrance Examination. From the year 2007, admission is through the engineering entrance examination conducted by Amrita. Currently there are 16 faculty members and more than 240 students in 4 batches doing 4 years of study.

Department of Information Technology started in June 2002 as a part of Amrita Institute of Technology & Science (AITEC) with one batch of 60 students. AITEC was then under Kerala University and students were admitted through the Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by Government of Kerala. The first two batches of Information Technology were passed out under Kerala University. In the initial stages, the department worked together with the Computer Science and Engineering as the courses offered were more or less similar in nature. Both the CSE and IT departments were under the single leadership till 2007 July.
In August 2003, Amrita Institute of Technology & Science (AITEC) came under the ambit of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritpauri Campus where University Grants Commission granted the deemed universtiy status for the campus. From 2004 onwards, the department came under Amrita School of Engineerng (ASE). The students admitted from 2004 - 2006 were through the Kerala Entrance Examination. From the year 2007, admission is through the engineering entrance examination conducted by Amrita. Currently there are 16 faculty members and more than 240 students in 4 batches doing 4 years of study.
Department offers 4 year B.Tech degree programme in Information Technology. This programme focuses on the software and application development part in the area of information technology and the theoretical computer science as well. A student completing this programme would be able to design and develop a software application according to the requirements given by a user. As this branch is closer to the software development the syllabi and curricula is updated frequently in every three years so as to meet the industrial requirements. From the 5th semester itself, the students are given wide range of elective in the area of sciences & computers that also includes the interdisciplinary courses offered by the other branches of engineering. For example, in the 6th or 7th semesters, a student from this programme is free to choose a course like Embedded Systems or Computer Graphics offered by Electronics / ComputerScience departments. The recommendations of the ACM Computing Curricula are also referred at the time of updating the curriculum
